I Want My Country Back

Or, perhaps, we should just be honest and rename it the United Corporation of America, since the government seems to have no other purpose now, than to further the interests and grant privileges and advantages to the corporations that own and run us. Kaufman, in Land of the Dead, didn't have a better, cozier set-up for his machinations.

Arise, my zombie minions! Take control - for we, the living, have relinquished all hold on freedom or justice or decency, and we await your undead wrath!

Or, so I feel this afternoon.

Poor, Kim. It's the same old dog and pony show. The country you want back was never here. They were just less obvious about it.

I don't know. I try to be cynical and think things have always been the way they are, but I just can't do it! And isn't that the funniest thing - how some people we know would say that *I'm* the one who's down on this country, and I'm the one who's trying to drag us into a morass of socialism and decay - but I'm really the most idealistic about the good ol' US of A! I really do believe in our greatness - I just don't see it in the current situation, is all!

Or, in other words, I can certainly understand the criticism that says, for example, that the Founding Fathers weren't fighting for freedom - they were fighting for the rights of rich, white guys (i.e. themselves). BUT - they had enough of a sense of civic virtue and responsibility that they would see their own well-being as relying on the well-being of others. To be crass: they'd buy you dinner at least, before they - well, you know - before they got what they wanted out of the exchange. Current corporate America - nope, they cut right to the chase and beat you to the ground before they proceed.
