Westbrook Pegler

This is the kind of thing that needs to get out there. I'll take it from no less conservative a rag than the WSJ:

The guy was also a "casual" anti-Semite. (I guess a "professional" one actually makes money off their anti-Semitism. Perhaps we should be optimistic that Palin did not quote one of those, like Julius Streicher.)

Wake up, people! Like Cheney's smirk - which fills me with rage every time I see that loathsome monster sneering at all the misery and death he's created - they're not even bothering to put lipstick on their faux populism as they ask you to grab your ankles. They won't even say please or thank you, or buy you dinner first. Okay, so they don't abort their fetuses and they carry around guns and they go to church - good for them! Those are all very nice qualities. That does NOT make them your friends. They'd no more have a beer with you, or piss on you if you were on fire, than they'd gouge out their own eyes and eat them.

Okay. Back to work. Finally read through of Valley of the Dead. I might stick in a few more Republican stand-ins.

Not cool enough that I feel obliged or eager to bend over for them.

Kim, I registered to vote the same day I registered for the draft: day after my 18th birthday. From that day to this, I've been registered without a party affiliation. This year, for the first time, we independents are in the majority!

This year would be a hard choice if I were just voting for the individual; it's the man I wanted to vote for four years ago versus the man I wanted to vote for four years from now.

But it's actually an easier decision.

I realize I'm not buying the face; I'm buying the policies. Like you, I live in the northeast where (I hope you agree) there has been a tradition of moderate Republicans who have proven to be able assemblymen, mayors and governors. Their fiscal conservatism is ideal for these jobs. Their "family values" are often genuinely heart-felt and practiced in their own lives; fortunately, they understand they can't get elected if they require everyone else to live exactly as they do. So they do their best to set an example and let everyone else do their own thing. And what's more American than that?

But the national party is wack. The red-meat speeches at the convention were narrowminded attacks on anyone who disagreed with their own internally contradictory talking points. I do not want these people in charge, particularly after the debacle of the past eight years.

And I got to tell you, as someone of Jewish heritage, there's something about 30,000 people chanting "Country first! Country first!" in unison that sends a chill up my spine.

Perhaps he's maintaining his amateur status so he will still be qualified for the next olympics?
