Stoker update

Just posted today. I check about 10x/day. I can't help it. It's nerve wracking but so exciting. GOTLD is still in the running. And all of this, right as I go through the final editing of my novel. Sometimes it's amazing how far a drunken boor can go in life; much farther, perhaps, than those who try to put other people down by calling them names. I was always taught that you reap what you sow.

Something called Reason magazine (http://www.reason.com) came in the mail again today. I'm not sure how they got my name, but it's been arriving, though I didn't subscribe. Tim Cavanaugh has a great article on zombie movies in it, pointing out some of the same social/political themes that I did in GOTLD. Always nice to see people who "get" it, vis-a-vis zombies. The magazine is libertarian, so Cavanaugh seemed to have to apologize for the films' politics a little, but that didn't obscure his (or Romero's) points as to the cultural importance of the undead.

Gratz on GOTLD rising to the challenge! I am starting your book this weekend. I'm pumped. World War Z was something else, well done - very pop zombie'ish. Younger author so I can respect his accomplishment. It starts in a third-world village where someone is bit on the foot. I'm not much of a writer but it opened my mind up to the possibilities of historical zombie re-emergences similar to your current post requesting a historical narrative.

Yes, I think that's where Brooks' talent lies - in imagining zombies in various settings and then describing it in vivid detail. His political satire is deft too. He imagines quite plausibly how the Chinese communists deal with a zombie outbreak: they'd shoot everybody in the head, but that'd scare everyone so bad that they'd run for the hills, thereby spreading the contamination. And how would the good ole' U.S. of A. handle it? Why, we'd have some war profiteering, with pharmaceutical companies making billions in government contracts by offering a placebo to the terrified millions, and then finally get our act together at the last possible minute. Doesn't sound too far fetched to me.
